Taking a gamble

Today i am taking a gamble by sowing in the first veggies for 2014. Early January is much to early for this part of the globe , half way March would be more appropriate but this winter it's so abnormally warm that i'm willing to take the gamble. Today it's +10C the warmest i've ever seen it this time of year (-10C would be normal). So i took out the sowing trays , a little dirt and a few seeds. I decided to start of with six Romanesco and six Broccoli and see what happens if i sow them in the tray and put the tray in a little greenhouse i bought to start of my seedlings. I also added a small handful of organic fertilizer to help them start of

Compost bin

I have on my garden allotment a compost heap and that did not work quite as well as i hoped it would. Thinking about how to make the heap better i thought it was a good idea to have a barrel or bin to put the compost in. There was one major downside on the whole matter and that was money ... these things cost money and thats one thing i hate spending because i dont have a whole lot of it. Several thoughts on how to solve this crossed my mind but one stayed and seemd like a rather good one. Why not convert a wheelie bin into a compost bin ... now to get a free wheelie bin. I went to the city dump and talked to the guy that was in charge of the new bins and asked if he had any damaged ones ... he had plenty. But what do you want with it he asked , i told him the whole thing and he was ok with it as long as i removed the serial number and chip (yes they have a chip here) on the spot. So i did and i went home with my soon to be compost bin. I made 15 holes of approx 6cm in the bottom and two on each side and look a free compost bin yeah.
